CT Baggage-Screening Data Augmentation Platform — Aviation Security AI

Client: Transportation Security Technology Provider  ·  Sector: Aviation / Security Technology  ·  Services: Product Development, AI & Machine Learning Engineering, Scientific Computing

Overview

ClearPath Partnership designed and built a specialist software platform that generates labelled training data for AI threat-detection systems used in airport baggage screening. Detection models for CT security scanners need large volumes of scans containing threat items — data that is scarce, expensive to stage physically, and slow to annotate by hand. The platform solves this by digitally extracting real threat objects from CT scans and realistically injecting them into clean bags, producing training data with pixel-perfect ground-truth annotations automatically.

Challenge

Volumetric CT data is far harder to work with than 2D X-ray imagery: every object is a three-dimensional density volume, and a credible synthetic scan must respect the physics of the real world — how items rest, touch, and pack against each other inside a bag. The client also operated under strict data-sovereignty constraints: scan data could not leave their environment, ruling out cloud AI services entirely.

Approach

ClearPath delivered the platform end-to-end, from scientific-computing research through to a production application, including:

  • Automated threat-object detection and extraction from volumetric CT scans, with review and refinement tooling for operators, feeding a reusable, taxonomy-organised threat library
  • A physics-aware placement engine that injects items into cleared bags realistically — respecting bag boundaries, collisions, gravity and resting orientation — with automated fallback strategies for densely packed bags
  • Recipe-driven batch generation, synthetic bag creation with benign clutter, and persona-based scenarios (e.g. business traveller, family holiday) so datasets reflect realistic passenger baggage mixes at scale
  • Fully local AI assistance for object identification and placement guidance, running entirely on the client’s own hardware — no scan data ever leaves their network
  • Native support for the DICOS security-imaging standard and direct import from major scanner manufacturers’ proprietary formats, with physical density calibration

Outcomes

  • Labelled CT training data generated at scale, at a fraction of the cost and time of physical staging and manual annotation
  • Every generated scan ships with exact machine-readable ground truth, eliminating annotation error from the training pipeline
  • Rare and hard-to-source threat configurations can be produced on demand, improving model coverage where real data is scarcest
  • Full data sovereignty maintained — the entire pipeline, including its AI components, runs inside the client’s own perimeter

The engagement demonstrates ClearPath’s ability to combine deep scientific computing, AI engineering and product delivery to solve hard, regulated-industry problems — the same capability now available to clients through our product development services.
